Multi-million dollar All Blacks tourism attraction to open next year

An All Blacks tourism attraction is set to open at Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter during Summer 2017.

The All Blacks Experience development – said only to be costing in the ‘tens of millions’ – was unveiled at New Zealand’s premium tourism expo TRENZ 2016, which is being held this week in Rotorua.

Project lead and regional director Chris Atkinson says the attraction is a joint Discovery Partners and New Zealand Rugby development.

It will be housed in a building owned and built by Infratil. The site will also house a hotel and carpark.

Visitors will be guided through the 2500sqm attraction by coaches, and will experience a 360-degree cinema, learn about the importance of the game to ordinary New Zealanders, face off a 3D haka and gain some rugby skills with video tips given by Auckland greats, including Dan Carter.

The retail rack rate will be $50 for adults and $25 per child, but Atkinson says there will be discount rates for most New Zealanders. ‘This is going to be the thing to do in Auckland,’ she says.

Meanwhile, Weta Workshop revealed a Movie Museum was on target for a 2019 opening. It will house sets, props and costumes in a building sited opposite Te Papa in Wellington.
